The 50th edition of the Masters is widely regarded as the greatest ever. For Seve Ballesteros and his army of fans, however, the 1986 Masters delivered only heartache.
I saw him there in 1985. It was a very wet, very miserable second day at Sandwich and Seve was not in the best of moods. Still fantastic to watch though. You couldn't take your eyes off him.
It was definitely a sweetener that Jack won in such style, wafting that massive-headed McGregor putter like a wand and sending the noise off the charts.
Excellent, Dan. The profound horror of that moment is still pretty real for Seve fans, even 39 years on. I've always appreciated how brilliant Nicklaus was that day, but I so wish it had turned out differently.
You and me both Tony. The Masters in the 1980s was the nearest thing to a guarantee that Seve would be in the hunt on Sunday. I think he would have won 7 possibly 8 majors had he won in 86
Thanks Matt. Definitely worth a watch of the final day broadcast on the Masters YouTube. It starts at hole 10. No coverage of Kite and Seve holing out for eagles on 8. The Nicklaus charge has to be seen to be believed. Watching Norman carve one into the patrons on 18 was quite pleasing!
I remember seeing Seve playing in the British Open at Royal St George's, Sandwich, Kent in 1979. Unforgettable.

A brilliant read Dan!
Thanks for taking the time Liz
Took me back, never realised at the time how I would get hooked on golf from this moment. Really enjoyed going back, thanks 🙏
Thanks John
Super article
I was sad for Seve that day but happy for Jack and his amazing win

I need to go back and watch this round. This is one of the most compelling golf stories I’ve read in a long time.
